Bleaching or whitening: a conservative technique using a peroxide based gel that is applied to the teeth either at home or at a dental office. Most bleaching done today is the "at home" type and involves a custom made gel holder that prevents the bleach from irritating the gums. This is usually worn at night for two to three weeks. Natural teeth usually become significantly lighter, but crowns or visible fillings will not change color and may not match the lightened teeth. They may need to be redone after the bleaching treatment.
